Diabetes in African Americans

With the increasing change in our lifestyle, there are many lifestyle diseases that are on the rise. Lifestyle diseases have claimed millions of lives and the menace is still to continue with no apparent change in our diet and lifestyle. One of the lifestyle diseases that are claiming million of lives is type II diabetes. Diabetes which leads to reduced absorption of sugar in the body leading to high levels of blood sugar has claimed million of lives and incapacitated others as it comes with many complications. While diabetes can be managed through diet, the increase consumption of refined food with tendency to live a sedentary life remains the highest predisposing factor. However analysis of the prevalence of the disease shows that African Americans are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and its complications.  There are many factors which predispose African Americans to increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes in African Americans

Diabetes mellitus is one of the challenges that American is facing as a nation.  More than 30 million African Americans have an increased risk of suffering from type II diabetes compared to other populations in the united stats.  Statistics reveal that there are more and more African Americans who are suffering from diabetes mellitus each and every year. Fro example in 1993, there were more than 1.3 African Americans suffering from diabetes which was three times the figure of African Americans who were suffering from the disease in 1963. Statistics also reveal that for every white Americans who is diagnosed with the condition, 1.6 African Americans are diagnosed and for every one African Americans diagnosed with the condition at least one is not diagnosed. The recent prevalence shows that one in every four black Americans women above the age of 55 years has type II diabetes while twenty five percent of black Americans between 65 and 74 years may be suffering from the condition.

Causes

There are two type of diabetes. The first one is juvenile onset of type 1 diabetes which occurs to individual below the age of 25 years. This is usually cased by the inability of the body to produce insulin.  This can be due the failure of the pancreas to secret insulin or there may be production of low levels insulin or insensitivity of body cells to insulin. The other is type 2 diabetes or non insulin diabetes which is the most prevalence form of diabetes especially among the aged.  For African Americans, there are three main factors which predispose them to the condition. (Black Health Care.com, 2008)

The first factor is the genetic factor where it has been shown that they had inherited trait or a thrifty gene which they have inherited from their ancestors.  This gene which was used by African slaves to survive feast and famine has made it difficult for them to control their weigh which predispose them to the condition. The second factor is the medical factors where it has been found out that African Americans have impaired glucose tolerance and hyperinsulinemia. However the leading medical factor is obesity. African Americans have shown a higher truncal or upper body obesity which predisposes them to the condition. This factor remains controversial because the population of African Americans with upper body obesity has a higher rate of obesity compared to the same white population. The last factor is life style risk factors where lack of physical exercise has been cited as a leading factor. (American Diabetes Association, 2008)

Effects and management

Increased type II diabetes among African Americans has   been shown to have various negative effects on their life.  African Americans have been shown to have a higher rate of complications especially blindness, kidney failure, and amputation.   African Americans also suffer from higher rate of disability from complications compared to the rest of the population. While diabetes was not counted as a leading cause of death among African Americans, today it has been cited as one of the leading causes of death among the population. (American Diabetes Association, 2008)

Unlike type 1 diabetes where individuals become permanently reliance on insulin since the body does not produce, type 2 diabetes can be managed using diet and physical exercises. The  two leading cause of the condition as we have seen is increase consumption of refined foods and lack  of physical exercise which pushes insulin demand to the roof.  Diet and exercise has been cited as most effective tool that can manage type II diabetes. For diabetes it is advisable for individuals to consume whole unrefined food, reduced the intake of carbohydrates in order to reduce weight, increase the intake green vegetables, reduce intake of fat, and increase intake of water. This is meant to reduce weight and reduce the amount of sugar intake. Individual are also encouraged to engage in physical exercise for not less than 30 minutes at least three times  in a week. Longer but low intensity exercises like jogging, cycling, walking at a panting pace, are recommended since they lead to reduction of fat in the body and increase the function of the body. Exercise also improves the ability of the body for sugar uptake by increasing functioning of the insulin.

Mexican Drug Cartel solders shot in Arizona desert: Los Zetas officer says shoot to kill Americans in retaliation

One of my informants that I have called Juan in previous news reports, called me recently on the cell phone he provided me at out last meeting a month or so ago. He told me that his boss a Los Zetas Mexican drug cartel officer wanted to meet with me and give me some important information regarding the so called war on drugs raging on the border. A date and time was set up for this meeting at a public place.

During this encounter the Mexican I met was clean shaving with a military style, "high and tight" short hair cut, who looked to be about, I guess 35 years old or so, who claimed to be an officer in the Los Zetas Mexican drug cartel organization. He told me straight out that he believed two of his men were shot and killed recently in the desert in Arizona by American vigilantes and he would be taking revenge. He first said he thought that his men where killed by opposing drug cartel member gangs. He said he and his men had killed several gang members recently who they thought was responsible for those killings and other recent attacks in the area.

That bloody confrontation took place just south of the Arizona border. The shootout,  left 21 dead. The violence took place between the hamlets of Saric and Tubutama, along a notorious smuggling corridor. Nearby is the town of Altar, which I have reported on in the past and which for more than a decade has been a major staging area for illegal smugglers headed for the Arizona border. 

The World Net Daily reported that while Americans were celebrating Independence Day weekend, news of a gun battle near the Arizona-Mexico border, rivaling anything from the old "Wild West" days, wasn't getting much attention.

Here's what you likely missed: Rival Mexican drug gangs shot it out 12 miles outside of Arizona, leaving 21 dead. At least six others were wounded.

The Los Zetas officer said "I now believe my men were shot by crazed American vigilante cowards, who ambushed my solders at night, shot them from a great distance using high powered American rifles. Than our load of drugs were stolen".
He said, "this is a warning to those type groups that his men have been instructed to shoot and kill any Americans who are seen armed and roaming the deserts". He went on to say that the murder of his men has not been properly investigated by the sheriff of Pinal County.
The Los Zetas officer said "I believe there is a cover-up by sheriff  Paul Babeu by protecting the Americans who did the killings. If the true facts of this case are not revealed publicly and the guilty ones are not brought to justice then I will hold the sheriff personally responsible".

The Los Zetas officer went on to tell me that "I have many of my Zetas solders posted throughout the area watching these groups and there movements and it will be just a matter of time before our side gets revenge". " In the mean time you must leave our people alone and the drugs they carry or my instructions we'll stand and this will mean war."

Vigilante type death squads roam the Mexican drug cartels drug corridors choke points, hunting for armed drug smugglers. These patrols are heavily armed with military style automatic and semi automatic weapons including 50 cal sniper rifles with night vision scopes and use technology such as night vision goggles, Vietnam error ground sensors and hidden trail cameras. Using these sophisticated weapons and technology make them a real force to be reckoned with and very dangerous while patrolling the Arizona desert and many other locations on the U.S. Mexican border from Texas to California.

There is several volunteer groups in the United States that claim to be watching our border with Mexico. Many of them are known as minuteman or patriot organizations. Some are just week end worries and don't pose much of a threat to Mexicans and do not try to arrest or otherwise play border patrol. They mainly just spot suspicious activity and call it into authorizes.

But there are other groups that are known to authorities as true vigilantes who are serious and dangerous, like Jason "J.T." Ready who recently has said publicly and through emails to be calling for his people to come to the Vekol Valley in Pinal County in camouflage clothing and to bring "plenty of firearms and ammo."
He's promoting it as "the Minuteman Project on steroids!" He writes at the end of one of his emails in all caps, "The invasion stops here."
He writes this about the "situation:"
"Armed Narco-Terrorists are bringing in loads of Chemical Warfare into our nation. These incursions should be treated no less serious than Al-Qaeda terrorists smuggling Sarin nerve agent into our population centers."

Ready, as a result of his calling for volunteers to launch a special operations effort in a Pinal County valley that Sheriff Paul Babeu recently said is in control of the drug smugglers. And where his deputy was shot and where two un-identified Mexicans were found shot to death by unknown assailants within the last month.
According to Ready the action is under way and that his men are there to show force and solidarity of concerned patriots. NSM, Constitutional groups, Militias, Biker MC's, National Guard, Military, multi-state participation groups, etcetera; [SIC] to stand the line near Interstate 8 to show the world that the line in the sand has been drawn. This is a completely legal venture and utmost professionalism and self-restraint is recommended.

"We're going to block off the narcoterrorists that come up through this area," said Jason "J.T." Ready, who is one of the organizers of the group. 
Ready says volunteers are coming from all over Arizona, and even out of state, to support the effort.
"This is the Minuteman Project on steroids," Ready explained. "We've got people with assault weapons. We will use lawful, deadly force where appropriate."
According to some reports Ready has ties to extremist groups, including a neo-Nazi group known as the National Socialist Movement.  Ready has denied the group is neo-Nazi.
But Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says, "Though I appreciate their support and offer to take up arms and patrol, this would not be helpful, and would only cause a strain on already strained resources, and their safety needs to be a priority. I do not ask or encouraged them to come here."

Arizona authorities reportedly found two bodies near a common border crossing recently, not far from where a police deputy was shot last April (MyFoxPhoenix.com).
According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office they are working with ICE and the Mexican Consulate to identify the men and notify next of kin, as information from the caller and documents at the scene "strongly suggests both men are now believed Mexican Nationals. Earlier authorities believed the pair were Americans.

Some investigators want to believe this incident is likely the result of the ongoing violent battle between Mexican drug cartels and not an American vigilante shooting. Investigators have not been able to confirm if the two men are part of the drug trade or just what they were doing at the camp.

Authorities believe that the Sinaloan drug cartel, is currently controlling the region from Rocky Point, Sonora, Mexico to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. How ever there are reports that the Los Zetas drug cartel has moved into the area and are now challenging the Sinaloan drug cartel.
"A competing cartel or other people stole their product from them and also killed them," Babeu said.
An autopsy on the bodies found marks on one of the men's shoulders consistent with carrying a large pack. Babeu says it could have been from carrying a drug load. Investigators are also looking into whether or not these men were involved in the shooting of deputy Purrol. That's because they asked dispatchers to send someone to the spot where purrol was shot.
"So they're familiar with the area. It's just not people watching it on TV. The desert looks similar in all kinds of remote areas in Arizona. He actually knew where the deputy was shot," Babeu said.
The sheriff admits the cartels are operating in his county and without the federal government's help they can't get control.
Babeu points out that the cartels control parts of his county in terms of the remote areas in the drug corridors in the desert here in west Pinal County. Our government has even erected signs warning citizens to beware this is a known drug corridor," Babeu said.

 
A spokesperson told the media that when the 911 call came in deputies immediately started a search but found the two bodies shot to death after four hours of looking. As a result of this violence Babeu asked President Barack Obama to send 3000 National Guard troops to the border to help stop it.
"We can't patrol not only these remote areas; we have a hard enough time just responding to our emergencies,"
Deputies found an automatic rifle near one of the men who was killed. The pair has yet to be identified but Babeu believes one of the men has been caught illegally in the United States at least seven times.
During that 911 call, a wounded suspected smuggler revealed tantalizing familiarity with the shooting of a Pinal County sheriff's deputy, the sheriff said. The caller now suspected of being a drug smuggler called 911 that evening after he and a partner were shot while walking up a smuggling trail in southwestern Pinal County. He and the partner died in a remote area before officers could find them. While trying to explain his location to a dispatcher, the suspected smuggler said in Spanish that he was "right here where they shot the sheriff."...

Caller: Yes, somebody shot me, we were running.
Dispatcher: Where are you?
Caller: Right here at the 8, in this area.
Dispatcher: Where are you?
Caller: Right here where they shot the sheriff, on this side. By the store, there's a little hill please send a (sheriff) because there are some people, they want to jump us, they want to rob us and somebody shot us.
Dispatcher: Did you say on highway 8?
Caller: Yes. On the 8, the little hill right on the trail.
Caller: It is where it happened the last time where they shot the sheriff.
Dispatcher: Did they shoot you?
Caller: Yes, me and my partner. Because they want to rob us.
Dispatcher: Right now?
Caller: Yes, right now, right now.
Dispatcher: Where are you injured?
Caller: Right here in my stomach. I am bleeding a lot, I cannot walk.
Dispatcher: Did you say there's another person injured?
Caller: Yes, there is someone else but I can't hear him anymore.

Babeu the high-profile Arizona sheriff who has been outspoken about his support for the state's controversial new immigration law is receiving death threats, myFOXphoenix.com reported recently.

Some of the threats against Babeu were from the Mexican mafia and drug cartel members according to the report.
Outside law enforcement teams brought in to investigate the threats found them credible.

Babeu was very outspoken about the need to secure the state's border with Mexico -- a known entry point to the U.S. for drug smugglers and illegal immigrant traffickers -- and supports law SB1070, which makes illegal immigration a state crime.

Despite the threats, Babeu declined a personal security detail because the county resources were already stretched.
"I understand this threat, yet I will not run in fear or change my support for SB1070 and my demands for President Obama to secure our border with 3,000 armed soldiers in Arizona and start building the fence again," he said.
"I'm always armed, and as every law enforcement member knows, we always have to be aware of our surroundings and possible threats."
Pinal County is nearly 5,400 square miles and much of the desert is known as a drug and human trafficking corridor.

The U .S. Border Fire report called Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu to ask how the investigation of the two dead Mexican Nationals is coming along. I wanted to ask if they had been identified and were there any suspects in the homicides? Was the sheriff investigating the possibility that American vigilantes had shot and killed the two Mexican Nationals? This was several days ago with no reply to date.

You are actually considering "encouraging" your daughter to lose an accent, that seems a little overbearing to me even at five. Just let her do what she is going to do. A refreshing Art Initiative—Religare
With a flood of interest being generated in Indian art, paraphernalia of art is growing albeit in a non organised tipsy fashion.
Normally the world over there is a clear distinction between art museums and art galleries. The museums often owned by state are supported by the private capital from donations or gifts of money or/and works of art. The private galleries operate on the unitary principle of profit. Art galleries use the fundamental of high profit generation for their operations. They have research departments that keep tracking pricing/popularity of individual artists, they scout for fresh talent, research on future graph of artists to invest and hold inventories of works of art, collaborate with art auction houses and art Funds, carry out documentation on art and artists for different genres, media, period etc, they work to create durable relations with substantial interest art collectors, they help to build theme specific collections for individual collectors, they help to reshuffle the existing portfolio of art of collectors, help in the valuation and authentication of art works, they seek suitable art curators for upcoming exhibitions, they plan their art calendar for medium and longer terms periods, they work out their media plans for art promotion.
A very important function of private galleries alongside profits is to educate and create awareness and interest about art in general and in specific art works of artists with fresh creative expressions. This they do by mounting exhibitions and learned writings on art. They also organise interactive sessions with art loving public and the collectors, Organising lectures and seminars involving experts from the field.
Is it for money alone that one should look for art related activities? Yes and no. First let's consider art as investment value. The systematic, expertise based investments in art require market transparency, information flows, a fair pricing mechanism and a developed art infrastructure in which competitive art market exchanges can take place. These and many more questions require answers generated by art market players who have an honest commitment to art related activities. This will help more people to look at art as an investment in their asset portfolio.
But art is also cultural repository of a society. It is what we pass on to the future generations to be proud of as a national and sub-national entity. To nurture, to educate to be proud of our art and to keep in good health the art works is responsibility that goes alongside the investment value of art.
Religare is a welcome entrant to the art market field. Its business interest is in financial services. Its main area of interest is in Retail, Institutional and Wealth management. It has put its signature in international finance through its subsidiaries and strategic joint ventures. Thus Religare is suitably placed to launch an initiative in art with its background in asset management. Religare has launched with professional acumen Religare Art Initiative a multi pronged initiative. Mukesh Panika heads this Initiative. RAI is planned to be a multi layered art hub housed in very avant garde space in Atma Ram mansion in historic Scindia House in the Outer Circle of Connaught Place New Delhi. The interior is designed to have multiple art related activities including substantial space for a gallery. An area of 10,000plus square feet sounds very encouraging for this art hub.

It's New it's Different
What struck me were the unusually imaginative and creative interiors. Looking up on ceiling you find sausage shapes meandering (I am sure they are airconditioning ducts) about. From floor sturdy flat iron pillars with nuts and bolts rise up more like the support pillars on tin sheeted old railway platforms all over India. The raw touch of the space adds an art brut feel to the interiors. To me the interior recalled Fernand Léger tubular industrial machine art. The interior looks like a roving installation and breaks the space and reduces possible monotony. The visual movement in space is created by the use of glass walls. You can visually reach out to spaces and your curiosity moves your feet onwards. The viewing space also climbs up like a mountain trail and offers an individual personal communion with the art work. The restaurant is enveloped by exhibition space and you will be able to combine the aroma of an espresso with equally strong art that Religare is betting on to serve as a main course. The resource centre will be useful to seek references to artists and their works and all that concerns art. Thus what I said in the beginning about the distance between galleries and museums, Religare Art Initiative attempts to bridge it. They are not just a gallery but aim to combine functions normally devolving on museums. It is a new concept for India since they intend to enrol artists, art lovers, researchers to be members of a new art fraternity and work as it muscles and sinews and of course it heart and brain.
The first of the exhibition they launched is called Outer Circle synonymous with location of the place but also carrying a double entendre in reference to the art of the young upcoming artists that is showcased. They have decided to include varied forms and media of artistic expression namely paintings, photographs, sculptures, installations, video from 16 of the upcoming artists. Seasoned experts Alka Pande and Mukesh Panika are the curators for the maiden exhibition running through October 2008.
Need for logistics
The other day while talking to some art collectors we happened to focus on the problems being generated in art field. There appears to be a lack of really creative artists in sufficient numbers to create a more broad based art collection. A few names circulate from gallery to gallery and while the new art shops deal in a kind of calendar photo pictures probably debasing the aesthetic tastes of collectors.
Secondly every person who is worth a couple of visits to art exhibitions swears that he is an art expert, dealer, consultant, advisor, curator. A gentleman who left his pen pusher's job to hold exhibitions called up an artist friend and requested him to grace the opening of the exhibition since he had one of his works in the show. My friend on arrival discovered that it was another artist's work who shared first name with him and this art expert did not know his B's from P's. A lot of drift wood and flotsam appears when river rises. I hope Religare team knows that, with a fine reputation and professionalism of mother organization to back them their job is cut out fine. They will have to work overtime to create a neat, transparent art space so that the dead wood is swept aside and a new synergy is created in art.

Chinese art catching up with the contemporary

Chinese culture goes back to such times where the folk culture influenced the art and lifestyle. The art was mostly influenced by the available items in the surrounding. Pots and pottery were the main items which dealt with various artistic experiments. Then porcelain, was introduced which took up the fancy of the artisan in china and porcelain became so popular that westerners started calling porcelain of being synonyms with China material, in the English speaking nations. At one point, Chinese art was influenced by the Buddhist school of thought. At this time the art reflected the emotions on a canvas in the shape and form of Buddha. Many patrons encouraged the making of sculptures. Hence we find lot of canvas prints and sculpture with Buddha being main theme. During the dynasty rules in China, the art form was influenced by the dynastic thought and their living conditions. As time progressed, the Chinese art was influence by the west and the new culture and took the form of contemporary art. The art form started reflecting what the surrounding had to give. It went outside the Chinese land and the artists took the Chinese art outside the country and their canvases started selling in the outside market. To meet the interests of the outside art lovers, the Chinese artists starting taking ideas from their contemporary art forms like that of European art, Indian art, etc. Even the artists started copying the western influences into their pictures but without much comprehension and it were largely unsuccessful. The influence of various art forms like dance forms in china became more westernized and though the Chinese flavor was still alive, it adapted to the need of the art lovers. The art form also paved a way to the outside world. One of the impediments for late invasion by the western art form was because of the overwhelming communist influence on the art form. During the last few centuries, a heavy influence by the communist thought saw the art forms getting more politicized and the assimilation could not be so fast with the outside world. As and when the various artists went outside of their land to interact with various other countries either under education system or cultural system, and then only the western influence was more prominent. Even now there are many artists from China who are well known and have still their own art form heavily ingrained in the artistic expressions.

You already answeres your question. Those cuves and lines! Men seem to have a "blockiness" to them while women are softer and "Rounder". (Not fat round!) I think because of that alone that's what makes them great subjects. In some of the stuff I do, (Wich is usually horror related) I use the female form to give things contrast, (Horror and beauty) and to give some things a softer edge sometimes. (I still get into trouble for the subject matter sometimes though.) I'm married to what I think is the most beatiful woman on the planet and sometimes I'll just watch her do stuff just to watch her move. It's like poetry in motion. Women just have that natural grace to them. They are the perfect subject in art, they truley are inspiring.

Dudes on the other hand I think are hard edged and come on we're not what you'd call graceful. We're clods and way more angular. When was the last time a dude was thought of in a way of beauty? (Ok if you were Boy George back in the eighties. Chicks I know thought he was a beautiful man.) Unless you find a brick wall attractive well.....there's not much there to work with.
